KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

The Star gets show-cause letter

The Star has been given seven days from yesterday to convince the Home Ministry not to suspend its publication licence, after publishing on its front page a picture of Muslims praying on the first day of Ramadan under a headline for a separate article titled "Malaysian terrorist leader".

Umno's Kempas assemblyperson Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Jumat called for the daily to be suspended for allegedly hurting the feelings of Muslims.

The Home Ministry letter comes amid public outcry, but media studies professor Zaharom Nain said it is "infantile" of the public to seek government intervention each time there is a perceived slight.

Media advocates also said the media should instead have self-regulating mechanisms, such as appointing an ombudsman to deal with public complaints.

Non-Muslims at buka puasa a problem for some

Gombak PAS chief Salehhudin Nasir said in a Facebook posting that he is "disgusted" that DAP leaders are joining fast breaking events, when they are "enemies of Islam".

Meanwhile, the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Commmitee said the NGO Jaringan Muslimin Pulau Pinang, which said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng should be barred from attending buka puasa events, was not reflecting true Islamic teachings.

Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said he will defy his critics and attend a Pakatan Harapan fast breaking event next month.

Other Kinibites

DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony questioned if the government had "paid' Chinese carmaker Geely Automobile Holdings Group to take up a 49.9 percent stake in Proton, after Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani said the ministry would disburse the final RM250 million from the RM1.5 billion soft loan provided to Proton last year.

Former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim said "ex-dictator" and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be elected PM again to beat "the current dictator".

Looking ahead

The trial of the two women accused of killing North Korean leader's half brother Kim Jong-nam is set for mention.

Pandan PAS will lodge a report to urge police to act against The Star for its front page featuring the headline "Malaysian terrorist leader" together with a big picture of Muslims praying.
