CM: New funding model for S'wak to be announced in April
ADS

Sarawak is set to have a new 'funding model' which will be announced next month (April), says Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.

He said the federal government should help the state in terms of funding, but Sarawak still required its own approach.

"I have to find a new model, we cannot rely on Kuala Lumpur only... we have to have our own funding model. Insyallah, next month I will announce the new model," he said during a dialogue session on the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) plan at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kota Samarahan, today.

Abang Johari said the matter had also recently been communicated to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"Thank God, we feel Najib is very close to Sarawak, I said to him 'I have a new model sir, can you support me... I will announce it next month," he said.

At the same session, Abang Johari also said he saw the potential for Sarawak to become an 'energy powerhouse' in 2050.

"That's why we took back the Bakun Dam from Putrajaya, because we want to ensure that our power will benefit Sarawak as well as our neighbour.

"Now we are selling our power to Kalimantan, Indonesia and they (Kalimantan) have to upgrade the power grid. The power grid project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), we can be the electricity suppliers for the whole of Borneo.

"This is our aspiration for TN50," he added.
