There is no need to question the police when they detained several individuals from both the yellow and red-shirt groups who participated in the Bersih 5.0 rally today, said MIC president Dr S Subramaniam.

He said it was the responsibility and rights of the authorities to detain anyone who deemed as a threat to the peace and stability of the country.

"The legal system in the country provides the police to take necessary action to ensure that our country remains safe and peaceful," he told reporters after the handing over RM1 million cheque from the federal government for the Thirusula Maha Mariamman Temple Construction Fund in Kuala Kangsar today.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir, Tabung Haji chairperson Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim and Kuala Kangsar Member of Parliament Mastura Mohd Yazid.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also Health Minister, also urged the public not to be easily deceived and spread any news, message or video on the rally without verifying its authenticity.

"The people must verify first (the authenticity) of any message or image that has been circulated. Sometimes, what have been spread were meant to confuse the people.

"Therefore, the police and the people must always be wary," he said.

Red Movement NGO Coalition Malaysia chairperson Jamal Md Yunos and Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah were among 14 individuals detained today.

Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said more people who participated in the Bersih 5 rally including the red-shirt supporters would be detained and charged in court.
