Suzuki Motor has shut down its motorcycling assembly plant in Malaysia due to weak demand.

The motorcycles will be exported from Japan from now on, Nikkei Asian Review reported.

The plant had its annual output halved to around 8,000 units in 2015, compared to 2013, Nikkei reported.

The firm will focus on exporting "lucrative larger models" from Japan, it added.

Suzuki Assemblers Malaysia Sdn Bhd was established in 1971.

The plant is located at the Prai industrial area, Penang.

In February, Samsung TV shut down its Seremban plant while British American Tobacco closed its Petaling Jaya plant in March.

However, Toyota Motor said it will build another factory in Malaysia with the aim of increasing regional supply.

The new facility is expected to cost US$275 million and will churn out 50,000 vehicles a year starting 2018.
