The political crisis in Terengganu will be tackled in the best manner so that it will not burden the people in the state, said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

He said the latest political situation was being monitored and he was waiting for a report from Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

“We will tackle the political situation in Terengganu so that the people in the state will not be inconvenienced and I am monitoring, waiting for the report from the MB (menteri besar)," he told a media conference to brief them on the outcome of his three-day working visit to Jakarta which ended today.

The political crisis in Terengganu was said to become more acute when its former menteri besar, who is also the Kijal state assemblyperson, Ahmad Said, will be penalised by the Umno disciplinary board for acting against the BN-led government including proposing a vote of no-confidence on the menteri besar.

The position of the state government will be weakened if Ahmad were to be expelled from Umno because the BN has only 17 seats in the state legislative assembly while PAS has 14 and PKR has one seat in Terengganu.

Ahmad, in his statement recently, said two scenarios might crop up in the near future in Terengganu, namely if the state assembly is suspended, a snap election must be held.

He said, however, if more than two Umno assemblypersons left the party, then the opposition would form the next state government.

Asked about the possibility of an election being held in the state, Najib said the matter could not be anticipated because it depended on the discipline of the BN members (assemblypersons).

However, he said, all the BN assemblypersons had made a pledge to support the BN and he personally would monitor the subsequent developments.

Ahmad Razif was appointed as the menteri besar to replace Ahmad in May 2014.
