Differing reports have emerged as to whether or not PAS will join Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new opposition coalition.

The Star this afternoon published a report with the headline "Hadi says no to PAS joining new opposition coalition".

However, Bernama has since reported the Marang MP as saying that PAS would not rush into the coalition and would study their options first.

Mahathir yesterday confirmed speculation that a new party was in the works, saying it would be part of a grand opposition coalition fighting BN in the next general election.

In The Star's report, Hadi was quoted as saying PAS always ended up as the punching bag in its alliances, and wants no interference in its struggles.

“PAS has its own policies and mission. For us, what we want is no interference in what we are championing for. We don’t want to be criticised for our struggles and see everything we want sidelined.

“We have always tried working together with other parties but in the end, we become the punching bags,” Hadi reportedly said.

The report also quoted him as saying he was uncertain if Mahathir's new coalition, which will be formed with PKR, DAP and Amanah, would survive.

Bernama's report, however, is significantly different, with the Islamist party president reported as having a more cautious approach.

"PAS has a central committee, political committee, and the Syura council, which will do a detailed review of PAS' action on whether it wants to join the coalition or not," the national news agency reported him as saying.

Both articles were based on an interview reporters had with him at the Rusila mosque after Friday prayers.
