Anti-Uber cabbies can’t halt the march of technology

YOURSAY | ‘Breaking a car window and causing bodily harm is a Penal Code offence.’

50 cabbies 'ambush' Uber driver, passengers; one injured

Cogito Ergo Sum: Many taxi drivers in KL Sentral and several other areas do not use their meters. They demand exorbitant fares and get angry at Uber and Grabcar for 'encroaching' into their territory.

Our taxi services are notorious and this incident is just another that reinforces such a reputation.

Anonymous_1425871172: A few years back, Umno Youth glorified the mat rempits.

These motorcyclists do not care about the law, including driving against the traffic and running red lights.

To make it worse, the taxi drivers are now turning into hooligans. What is the government and the police are going to do?

Nothing, I presume. Malaysia is doomed.

Vent: "As long as the car owner can prove that the taxi drivers had acted intentionally, the police will investigate the matter under the appropriate laws and would not let off the perpetrators lightly," Kuala Lumpur traffic police chief Nazri Hussain reportedly said.

In other words, the police are going to sleep on their job just like the MAS employees except in this case, it will be a criminal act of negligence because all the evidence is there waiting for them.

Anonymous$&@?: "He (Nazri) also warned that the dispute between taxi drivers and the ride-sharing service providers Uber and Grabcar must not escalate to violence, or action would be taken."

Is this police officer blind or blur? If 50 taxi drivers allegedly smashing an Uber driver's car was not categorised as 'violence', then we will see more of such attacks.

Not nipping such acts of defiance immediately in the bud by such thugs will not only embolden them, but make them think their act is sanctioned by the authorities.

Dont Just Talk: How pathetic when taxi drivers have to fight with Uber drivers over their livelihood and Jho Low, the sole owner of Good Star, can walk away with more than a billion ringgit just because he has the right connections with the ‘untouchables’.

My heart cries out for the hard-working taxi drivers who put in long hours, yet earning barely enough to survive because of inflation from the 6 percent GST (Goods and Services Tax).

Rngsc: The police must investigate. Breaking a car window and causing bodily harm is a Penal Code offence. The offenders can be jailed.

Please PRDM (Royal Malaysian Police), do not allow these taxi ‘gangsters’ to get away. Besides the damage to property and bodily harm, it also damages Malaysia’s reputation as a tourist attraction.

Determined Sarawakian: Uber and Grabcar are illegal in Malaysia (at the moment). They are basically 'kereta sapu'.

Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) must tackle this corporate irresponsibility and if Uber and Grabcar wanted a share in the taxi business they must be registered like all cab companies in Malaysia.

SBH: Indeed, any kind of assault has to be investigated and the aggressors charged. Because of the incompetence of our police, the cabbies are turning into road bullies.

I used to sympathise with the cabbies, now I will start using Uber or Grabcar as frequent as I can.

Mechi: I have taken Uber in the Klang Valley many times and have been impressed by their service.

Kudos to them and they are here to stay, unlike the taxi drivers which are "politically linked".

Kayluan: Would the cab drivers done the same thing if former minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Wahid Omar was the Uber driver?

Police deny 50 cabbies attacked Uber car, tourist injured

James_3392: Spad, taxi associations and all relevant authorities should better wake up from their slumber. Uber, Grabcar and the likes are not going away.

Such innovations and self-driving cars have already forced their way into the auto industry, and manufacturers have to abandon their century-old way to accommodate them.

Tony Soprano: Rioting taxi drivers? I'd urge all foreign tourists to bypass Malaysia altogether and proceed to Thailand.

Malaysians should curb their delusions of being close to "developed-nation status with first-rate infrastructure" and so on. You're only embarrassing yourselves.

First, you're seriously deluded when it concerns our infrastructures. Second, you won't come close to that "status" you crave before you have a truly civilised society.

Lkslim2: It doesn't matter whether there were 50 or one angry cab driver. The damage has been done.
