The Sessions Court in Johor Baru today allowed controversial lawyer Kamal Hisham Jaafar bail of RM200,000 in two sureties on four charges of abusing his position as a company director.

Judge Azura Alwi also imposed several other conditions, including for him to surrender his passport to the court and to report himself at the Majidee police station every week.

The court set Oct 11 for mention.

Kamal Hisham, 45, was charged with abusing his position as director of Southern Ads Sdn Bhd in connection with the lease of a business space at JB Sentral between 2009 and 2011.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges last September and also to two alternative charges under the Companies Act 1965.

The court then set today to hear the affidavit in reply from the defence on the bail.

Head of the Johor Prosecution Unit Saiful Edris Zainuddin, had on that day, requested the court to not allow Kamal Hisham bail as there was a tendency that the lawyer would flee.

However, the defence, led by lawyer Hazman Ahmad, objected to it, saying that the purpose of bail was to ensure Kamal Hisham appear for hearing of the case.

In a related development, a Magistrate’s Court in Johor Baru today extended the remand order against Kamal Hisham until this Monday.

Kamal Hisham was first remanded for seven days since Sept 4 to facilitate police investigation into several cases of criminal breach of trust.
