Penang Bersih northern region chapter staged a flash mob near Komtar to remind the people about the RM2.6 billion ‘donation’ in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s private bank accounts.
One of the demands of Bersih 4, which is organising a 34-hour mammoth rally in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, is to urge for Najib to resign to allow investigations to commence over the questionable “donation”.
The one-hour event was held at three locations in the heart of George Town yesterday evening: Prangin Mall (facing Dr Lim Chwee Leong Road), the walkway outside 1st Avenue Mall (facing Magazine Road) and at the Komtar bus terminal.
When they arrived at the locations, the flash mob participants froze in several interesting postures for five minutes.
Some were spotted holding the Jalur Gemilang or placards with slogans like "Bersih-Penang is Ready", while others acted as if there were collecting “donations”.
Since it was peak hours after work, many vehicles which passed by the areas where the flash mob was held honked to show their support.
Although police and shopping mall security guards kept watch on the participants, the event went on without disruption.
The participants dispersed peacefully after chanting "Bersih" three times, and cheering loudly.
'Art can also be used to express concern'
Bersih northern region secretary Ong Jing Cheng, who was part of the flash mob, expressed hope that the people would will use art to express their discontent on the issues of corruption, economic recession, undemocratic practices and other issues of concern to them.
"In addition to rallies and peaceful protests, creative and artistic expressions can also be used to protest and express the anger in our hearts.
"Therefore, Penang Bersih volunteers decided to perform this political flash mob before the weekend Bersih rally,” Ong said.
"We hope to show the government our alternative way of protest and express our rage,” he added.
According to Ong, people from the northern region are very eager to attend the rally tomorrow till Sunday, following a series of mobilisation and campaigning effort from Bersih volunteers.
"The response from the ceramah crowd was overwhelming, buses to Kuala Lumpur are fully booked and all Bersih T-shirts sold out,” he added.
