I would like to correct a glaring error in your reports on the Certificate in Legal Practice when you describe Khalid Yusoff as "...director since the inception of CLP in 1984". Khalid did not become a director of CLP until several years after the setting up of the CLP.
When the CLP was first set up, I was still an academician with the Law Faculty of the UM. That faculty as well as people like the late Prof Ahmad Ibrahim, Prof P Balan and others in the faculty then were deeply involved in the setting up and the running of the CLP.
In fact in the early days, the CLP exams were totally managed by the UM Law Faculty. When I was the dean of the faculty in 1987, I was a member of the Legal Profession Qualifying Board.
When the board decided that the CLP be managed differently, I believe its first director was Prof P Balan who was getting the services of UM's Examination Section for the conduct of the exams. This section is extremely experienced in conducting exams and has a proven track record of credibility and confidentiality.
In my humble opinion it is a pity that the UM, for reasons only known I'm sure to the members of the board, was and is out of the loop in the conduct of and management of the CLP exams.
I'm making this correction to ensure that the good work done by the pioneers of the CLP is not undermined or sullied by the current fiasco of the CLP.
