I refer to the letter But Jawi is BM!

For all the noble reasoning as to why Jawi is Bahasa Malaysia and not Arabic and that it should hold pride of place among Malaysians, it is still not a facet of the official language. As such, the complaint that the sign at the Malaysian Embassy is not proper is correct.

In fact, if any one should be accused of 'lacking in exposure or being ignorant', it would be the writer herself and the Malaysian ambassador to the United States or anyone anywhere else in the world, including Malaysia, where Jawi is being foisted as being representative of the national language.

Under the Bahasa Malaysia Act, or some similarly titled piece of legislature, the written form accepted as Bahasa Malaysia is Rumi, that is, script based on the 'English alphabet script', the Romanised version.

By all means, let Jawi be practiced by anyone who wishes to retain ties with the traditional and the historical. We still have the freedom to do such things but to contend that it is Bahasa Malaysia is unfounded and mischievous. Such writing would only be Bahasa Melayu.
