LETTER | Vaccines: Humanity at the mercy of humankind
ADS

LETTER | We are beginning to read about how the Covid-19 vaccine mannufacturer/s may be fundamentally flawed in the face of a global pandemic that has yet to outrun its damage on human life.

It appears that business opportunities, spin-off gratification and returns on investment are the fulcra of this human race against time to find an immediate and urgently needed measure to battle the ravaging virus.

Capitalism has become the determinant of who gets the vaccine and at what cost.

Legal webs have been spun through a variety of must-have NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) all in the name of plain protectionism.

Countries with poorly run governments and with non-availability of hard cash are being asked, according to reports, to even pawn national assets before deliveries can be made.

In the meantime undeniably (however ugly the truth is), an unprecedented global calamity that has descended upon humanity is also seen as a silver lining for those in the pharmaceutical industry from research, manufacture and sales.

Indeed, we are seeing the mother of all sins against humanity where capitalism rules the world unashamedly.

Where is the human drive to save humanity?

Suppose people perish by the tens of thousands owing to unaffordability to obtain the vaccines, who do we blame?

We gave paraded CSR initiatives by business entities the world over as our symbolic duty of love and care for the human race and all that dwells on planet earth.

But when the world is battered by a global virus, money emerges as the deciding factor of who lives and who dies.

Is this the civilisation that will finally exterminate humankind?
