I am concerned with the adverse remarks made by Lee about AirAsia in his letter Stop the fake letters, AirAsia! Let's be honest with ourselves and for one, let me declare my interest. I am not an employee of AirAsia and I am in no way connected with the airlines.
When Air Asia started with the cheap fares, it is openly stated that it is a 'no frills' airline. They have even made it clear that you are not allowed to bring your own food or beverages into the plane. Although this is stated, I have not seen it being enforced.
As far as I can see and though my experience in flying with this budget airline, the staff are polite. The sandwiches and the drinks are priced like any four-star hotel but it is still cheaper to fly AirAsia.
The free-seating policy is part of any budget airline and Air Asia gives you a 15kg luggage allowance. Anything above that, they charge. I know for a fact that I have at times exceeded the allowance but have been let off while at other times have been charged. Even with that, it is still cheaper than our national carrier.
The problem of the mad rushes to board the aircrafts is not so much AirAsia crowd control, but the selfish attitude of some Malaysians. You need not go far to see this; just hang around any of the bus stations or light rail transport stations during the rush hour and you will know what I mean. We have not learn how to queue up.
Somehow, we Malaysians have not caught on to this excellent habit. So why then blame AirAsia for the injuries sustained by the poor boy ? Are we not supposed to be civilised people living in a country with first-class infrastructure and amenities?
The only way AirAsia can control an unruly crowd is to employ Indian Railways guards with their long rattan stick. After a few thrashings, I can assure you we will have a first-class queuing mentality.
