Extremism in all religions is bad

LETTER | This may appear controversial and sensitive to some. Many may hate me for saying and writing this.

But as a human being and citizen, trying to maintain a balanced state and frame of mind, I am duty-bound and called to draw attention to this so that more people can continue to study, explore, investigate and find some solutions to the ailments inflicting our society.

In the course of following and engaging myself in debates with followers of religious figures or religious teachings for a very long time, namely those from Islam and some from Hinduism and other religions and beliefs, I came across many extreme followers, obsessed with protecting these figures, their teachings, culture and thoughts.

Some of them are extremely alarming whom I feel may actually need psychiatric help. Some may show, on rare occasions, streaks of violent behavior.

Many of these people may actually not realise at all that their behaviour is at odds with rational thinking and may pose dangers to themselves and others either mentally, or even physically. They may be under the illusion that they are doing good, being religious and probably wanting to secure heavenly or divine rewards.

Cultish maybe. All religions teach good and to do no harm unto others. But too much of religion imposed on public space and sphere may actually do more harm than good.

Personally, I am Muslim and I believe in the teachings of my religion and reject atheism. But I have seen and experienced enough to convince myself that being secular is the way forward for a progressive society and nation.

Whether it is extreme Islam, extreme Christianity, extreme Hinduism, all make me wary, except for Buddhism and Sikhism, which I find, at least in the context of the Malaysian society, somewhat peaceful.

If, at all, I have hurt anyone's feelings for saying this, please accept my sincere apologies.
