Local candidates for GE14 would ensure the public's best interests

LETTER | In politics, I only believe in capable politicians who can staunchly serve for people without being prejudicial about people's votes in ballot boxes.

Winning majority votes is a determining factor for electoral candidates to win their contested seats. Once they are elected, their focus has to be shifted to managing people's welfares.

In reality, voters want their leaders, state assemblymen and member of parliaments, to deliver their promises.

Serving the people is the main priority for elected leaders. Only domestic leaders understand people’s needs in their own constituencies, therefore, developmental agendas are well-driven if they are chosen to lead.

Local or domestic candidates are those whose bloodlines are from regions where their names are registered as electoral candidates. Some define them as residents who permanently live within geographical boundaries of their constituencies.

As a voter from Negri Sembilan, I learn that people highly entrust local leaders to lead them. Negri Sembilan Chief Minister Mohamad Hasan, who is also the state assemblyman in my constituency, sets a good example of being a domestic leader.

As a local man who was raised in Rantau, Mohamad Hasan understands well the people's needs in his constituency. He believes that every people who are in need, regardless of their races, need to be equally treated.

In my personal view, putting parachute candidates is no more a rationale move by any political parties as it could lead to detrimental causes to voters' well-being.

Being known as 'politicians with brains' is not enough to go for elections as parachute candidates. Parachute candidates won't serve for voters as sincere as domestic leaders do.

The political culture of naming 'outsiders' as an electoral candidate should have been eliminated earlier. As 14th general election is around the corner, divisions and states' leaders of political parties should be decisive in naming local candidates to contest in their own constituencies.

Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz (photo) has, in an interview with a local news portal, said that today's politics is all about serving for the communities; people are no longer interested about national issues that bring no benefits to them. Instead, they want their needs fulfilled by leaders they have voted.

Nazri also believes that the United States President Donald Trump won the US presidential election because he had promised to American voters that he wants to make changes for Americans. His manifesto: ‘Make America Great Again’ attracted voters to elect him.

I believe Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are now fully aware of the importance of putting local candidates to contest in their constituencies.
