Anwar's continued imprisonment will affect Malaysia's international standing
ADS

Anwar Ibrahim, who has served nearly 1,000 days in prison should be immediately released.

As a prisoner of conscience, Anwar continues to be a sacrificial lamb at the behest of certain corrupt leaders on politically motivated charges.

His continued imprisonment is an egregious black eye against rule of law in Malaysia and beyond.

Every second, every minute, of every day that Anwar is incarcerated further erodes any confidence of rule of law in Malaysia and shows the government’s utter disregard for basic human rights.

If his rights continue to be ignored, I strongly believe this has the potential to affect Malaysia's standing and economic relations with the US and other countries.

Anwar’s imprisonment further demonstrates a lack of compliance with basic international and national legal standards and as such is a concern and consideration for the international community.

KIMBERLEY MOTLEY is the international legal adviser for Anwar Ibrahim.
