The letter on the Malay elite's betrayal by Bumi Entrepreneur struck a chord in me - a Chinese entrepreneur- in that these things can only be expressed through the words of a bumiputera for obviously politically correct reasons.
The demolition of the old Subang International Airport terminal building and the acquisition of the whole Subang airport itself is symptomatic of the malaise. I remember as a young graduate working on those beautiful white terrazzo triangular-shaped columns holding the floating roofs of the airy building .
The whole terminal building costs less than RM10 million in those days (1965) and was serviceable up to the last minute of demolition. The question to be asked must be 'Why destroy a perfectly usable building and leave behind (as I drove past one weekend) what looks like the remnants of a bombed site?'
Shouldn't such structures be listed by legislation to prevent any repeat of such wanton destruction. And in its place? I hear it is going to be a business complex of some sort. And the runways? More plots for more bungalows no one really needs
In other words, a public asset has been converted into a piece of private speculation at no real cost to the speculators. I don't know if this is NEP, or elitism or whatever but for this one small entrepreneur, I'll do my enterprising elsewhere.
