Bersih 4 and the most fundamental right
ADS

Of all the fundamental rights, the voting right is the most fundamental of all. We can have the right to assembly, the right to freedom of expression, etc. But if we don’t have the voting right, the real voting right, then our democracy is damned.

The basic assumption of democracy is that human beings are fallible. We don’t expect saints or sages walking in the corridors of power. We expect the elected leaders to be greedy for power and wealth, to be corrupted by the fear of losing power and to be cruel to hold on to power to at all costs. This is not my main concern, though it is still important. Should we have great leaders, that would be our blessings.

My main concern is whether we are having a political system that can correct mistakes, and correct in time. It must also be a system that has hindsight and foresight. However, our deepest disillusionment is that we are facing a system that could not even differentiate right from wrong (moral and legal), not to say how to correct mistakes.

We are having a system that the ruling elites have lost all sense of shame. They lack moral principles and the moral courage to correct the wrongs.

The tragedy of our society is that those who point out the mistakes face criminal intimidation and imprisonment.

It pains our heart to see the loss of opportunity to be a great nation which has been blessed with all the natural wealth and great talents. It pains our heart to see the unnecessary hardship that the next generation are going to be burdened with.

Our main concern is not whether our PM Najib Abdul Razak will resign or not, but whether we are going to have a system that can correct mistakes.

If we had have our real, not fake voting rights, we would not have ended in having today’s wrongs of epic proportion, where the weak, the poor and the marginalised groups are to pay for the sheer folly of those in power.

So, we are going to walk and walk and walk till we realise a system that knows honour and compassion. We want to claim our right to have the rights and the most fundamental of all fundamental rights, the real voting rights.
