Official statistics on Malay population

BlueRider (' Malaysia practises bad journalism ') claims that the Malay population is 60 per cent.

I am not sure where he got this information from but according to the 2000 Census (as reported in the Malay Mail of Sept 18, 2003), the national population is 23.2 million, of which 11.7 million (50.4 per cent) are Muslim.

This figure includes non-Malay Muslims. If his figure of 60 per cent Malay is correct, then there must be a couple of millions of Malays who are not Muslim. This cannot be, for a Malay in Malaysia is constitutionally required to be a Muslim.

However, if Blue Rider meant that 60 per cent are bumiputeras, then he isn't far wrong. Bumiputeras, of course, include the Orang Asli and the native peoples of Sabah and Sarawak, not all of whom would consider themselves Malay.
