On the Wednesday of the 10th of April, a press conference was held at the Parliament of Malaysia in conjunction with the “Love MY Palm Oil” Campaign currently run by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council.

The conference primarily showcases Yang Berhormat Puan Teresa Kok promoting a few of the many products that have been and can be produced by Malaysia from palm oil as well as the surprising (to some) ways of which it can be consumed by the average consumer.

There was a focus on the red variant of palm oil in particular, a more complexly produced version of the mass produced yield, that retains more of its healthy benefits and nutrients consequently.

As highlighted by YB Teresa Kok, most people are unaware that when matters regarding palm oil and health benefits are concerned; they are actually referring to red palm oil.

Red palm oil is rich in carotenoids in addition to vitamins A & E. As has been previously advised by the Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad, a tablespoon or two of this nutritious oil has been linked to multiple health benefits; lowered cholesterol levels, boosted brain health as well as improved skin and hair health just to name a few.

Palm oil is also capable in replacing other common oils such as coconut oil. While coconut oil has its fair share of health benefits and loyal consumers, palm oil in comparison could prove to be the cleaner choice. This lies with the composition of the oil, where palm oil is the more well-balanced of the two with nearly even ratios of both saturated and unsaturated fat. Coconut oil on the other hand, is higher in saturated fats and medium-chain triglycerides.

In Malaysia, we love our cendol, and the coconut milk (a key ingredient in the local dessert) has long been a mainstay component. With advancements to palm oil today, we even have palm oil milk to revitalise and refresh our imagining of the familiar taste! Depicted in the video below are some of the frames where those in attendance at Parliament were lucky enough to be treated to the inventive twist to cendol.

Also in attendance at the Press Conference was Tan Sri Dato’ Augustine Ong, the Chairman of the International Society for Fat Research and President of the Malaysian Oil Scientists’ and

Technologists’ Association, who shared his support for the Malaysian cause and a few words with regards to palm oil.
