One of the things pivotal to the game of politics and quite evidently seen in our beautiful nation is the game called distractions. We see it all the time especially when there is a significant issue in our country.

Before anyone starts crucifying me on the big crosses we can find all around Sarawak, or accuse me of carrying the ‘Malayan Agenda’, please hear me out.

The Bersih 4 rally has been catching headlines for the past few days with the crowd in KL swelling to a record number reportedly at 500,000 over the weekend, an unprecedented amount of people willing to stretch it out for 34 hours and sleep on the streets to protest against the corrupt regime as well demand for clean and fair elections, among others.

A few days ago, there was a statement by the Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh that said that undergraduates found involved in the Bersih 4 rally will face action under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971.

‘Autonomy’ now seems to be the ‘magic word’ in Sarawak and with the bare mention of it spreads a certain excitement and ‘hope’ to many. It is also obvious why Chief Minister Adenan Satem chose this as the backbone of his regime and efforts to establish his power here in Sarawak.

The past few days, we have seen how movements like ‘Sarawak for Sarawakians’ have been gaining momentum and popularity among us fellow Sarawakians. State nationalism and state pride which is the core of the movement is noble and also vital to keep our people unified and focussed on demanding what is rightfully ours.

With all the political fiasco and moral policing that has been happening in the west (Malaya) recently, one of the most common comments from my fellow Sarawakians is how these things will never be an issue in Sarawak or even how good would Sarawak be if we were never part of Malaysia.
