COMMENT | In 1988, Malaysia faced a constitutional and institutional crisis that dramatically altered the status of judges as independent arbiters of the law.

This crisis was the culmination of escalating tensions between the executive, led by then-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and the judiciary.
