UOW Malaysia appoints renowned corporate figure as Chairman of the Board of Governors

Dato Mohammad Medan bin Abdullah has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of Governors (BOG) of UOW Malaysia University Colleges and Colleges.

The appointment was confirmed by the UOW Malaysia Board of Governors on 15th August 2023 and is for a term of 2 years. Dato Mohammad Medan began serving as a member of the BOG from 15th June 2022.

Dato Medan, began his career in Petronas, Malaysia’s national petroleum company, and has chalked up more than 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, spanning the entire value chain from upstream, midstream, downstream, marketing and trading. He was formerly the Managing Director/President (Asia Pacific) of GAZPROM Marketing & Trading Pte Ltd. Singapore, deemed the largest gas company in the world. He also helmed Bintulu Port Holdings Sdn. Bhd. from 2016 to 2023 as the Group CEO.

From humble origins in the Kelabit Highlands of Bario and high school in Marudi, Sarawak, Dato Medan has made great strides in the national and global stage. He studied law at the University of Malaya and the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA. In 2017 the Malaysian Institute of Management inducted Dato Medan to the Court of Emeritus Fellows, an accolade granted to individuals who have provided distinguished leadership and management not only for their organisations but across the industry. For his exemplary work as the Group CEO of Bintulu Port, he was honoured in 2022 as one Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives by the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability (ACES) Awards. Dato Medan has also previously served as a member of the Education Advisory Council of the Ministry of Education from 2014 to 2016.

Ms. Jennifer Ng, UOW Malaysia CEO cum UOW Global Enterprises CEO Asia welcomed Dato Medan’s appointment as Chairman and said that she believes Dato Medan will play a pivotal role to bring about lasting and significant developments for the UOW Malaysia entities.
