The UOWMKDU School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) in the Selangor and Penang UC campuses had a packed calendar of activities this summer. Culinary staff and students came together in the Battle of the Chefs 2022 competition. There  can be no better training ground than cooking under pressure in a competitive environment for budding chefs.

For our hospitality students, what can be more exhilarating and mind opening than  an annual immersion trip to Switzerland to experience first-hand the renowned Swiss  hospitality. Our hospitality students were hosted at the campus of our partner  institution, the International Management Institute to complete a module and were  taken on trips to places of culinary interest.

To provide exposure for high schoolers to the culinary arts discipline, the SHTCA  organised a Power Chef competition on the theme of Swiss cuisine. This event  attracted a record 100 students from 25 high schools in the Klang Valley.

Battle of the Chefs 2022

Battle of The Chefs 2022 is a Penang State signature culinary competition organised  by the Penang Chefs Association of Malaysia. It is endorsed by the World Association  of Chefs Societies (WACS) as a Continental Category Culinary Competition. This  National Culinary Competition event is supported by the Malaysian Department of  Skills Development, the Ministry of Human Resource, and many local authorities,  agencies and organisations.

This year there were 369 entries from 40 organisations participating in the competition  from 5th to 7th August 2022, attracting participants from not only throughout Malaysia  but also from the Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea and USA.

The SHTCA regularly sends teams of staff and students to battle against peers and  professionals from the industry. Participating in competitions builds confidence,  experience and connections with the industry – opening up a whole new world of  possibilities for our students.

Led and trained by Chef Chuah Lay Yen and Chef Darren Tan from the Penang UC  and Chef Hamiruddin and Chef Fami from the Selangor UC, 23 culinary students from  both campuses combined won 2 Golds, 4 Silvers, 7 Bronzes and 7 Diplomas in this  culinary competition.
