Seremban, 5 April 2021 – As leading property developer IJM Land continues to strengthen their commitment in ‘Bringing Life to Ordinary Spaces’, their annual Home Rehabilitation programme (myHome) returns this year by blessing a family of four, Mr Santosham and his family with a fully restored and comfortable home.

Led by Dato' Hoo Kim See, Senior General Manager of IJM Land Berhad in its 11th year, IJM Land reached out to Mr Santosham, a 62-year-old man (who recently got laid off his job and suffered from a stroke) and his family to uplift their quality of life that they deserved.

In this unfortunate circumstance, Mr Santosham relied on his wife’s menial income as a general worker at a nearby ‘nasi campur’ restaurant along with the financial aid given by the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) for his daughter who suffers from a mental deficiency to support the family, while his 19-year-old son is in search of a part-time job to lessen the family’s burden. With such insufficient income, the family lives day by day struggling to make ends meet in a home without electricity.

“We came across this family during our Deepavali Charity Cheer Programme in 2018 and saw the ill-fated state the family was in. Because of these circumstances, we wanted to provide them with the most basic necessity needed for one to live: a safe and fully equipped home,” said Dato’ Hoo.

It was a joyous day for Mr Santosham and his family as they were granted this honour of being the recipient of this year’s IJM Land myHome Programme – a programme initiated in line with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s “House Build” programme in celebrating World Habitat Day since 2010. The Handover Ceremony of the newly rehabilitated home was met with grateful smiles as Mr Santosham and his family received the certificate of completion for their home among other essential items including groceries, medical masks and sanitisers.

Since 2010, IJM Land has successfully helped over 10 underprivileged families rid themselves of their grief-stricken living situations and supplied them with a living environment deserving of all people through the Home Rehabilitation programme. However, due to the pandemic last year and implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Negeri Sembilan, IJM Land was compelled to postpone the programme to this year and with utmost determination, the leading property developer carried out this initiative in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the government.

“Imagining ourselves living in a home without electricity is already an enormous burden in itself, that we were determined to ensure this family was not deprived of this necessity any longer and settled their outstanding bill as well as applied for them the necessary electricity supply,” said Dato’ Hoo.

Immense repair work was carried out by IJM Land to restore Mr Santosham’s home, which included upgrades of their kitchen and bathroom, replacement of a new water tank, fencing with door gate and letter box, painting of the entire house, adding fan points with fans, plug points and lighting points for the family’s convenience, and other necessary repairs. The complete cost of refurbishing and repairs came up to approximately RM30,000 with generous contributions from respected partners HHR Setia Sdn Bhd, Jotun Paints (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Golden Hover Group of Companies who also sponsored refurbished furniture including sofas, coffee table, kitchen metal rack, kitchen cabinet, wardrobes, four units of dining chairs and outdoor clothes hanger.

“It is our mission to find the mandatory means in which we can pave the way for those in dire circumstances with a better life. Upon seeing Mr Santosham’s living situation, we jumped at the opportunity to give this family more than just a shelter, but a home equipped with essentials to have a much improved living environment. For this we are beyond grateful for the support of our contractors and suppliers in volunteering themselves in our yearly Home Rehabilitation initiative, for this unity among business associates have brought about a positive change to those in need.”

“Additionally, we also believe that the paint colours chosen for this family’s house will not only brighten up their homes but bring a sense of optimism and happiness to the family,” said Dato’ Hoo.

As a property developer, the Home Rehabilitation programme is IJM Land’s core Corporate Social Responsibility activity, and this programme directly coincides with IJM Land’s motto ‘We Make Good Better’ by giving the underprivileged a well-refined livelihood.
