KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

'Chicken s***! Pondan!'

A DAP lawmaker launched into a vulgar diatribe after Annuar Musa (BN-Ketereh) took aim at Lim Kit Siang's (DAP-Gelang Patah) protracted political career. Lim Lip Eng (DAP-Segambut) shouted, "Pengecut! (coward) Ayam! (Chicken) Chicken s***!", "separuh jantan" (half a man) and "eh pondan, diam la!" (shut up, queer) when Annuar refused to let Kit Siang interject.

Communication and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak has urged the opposition to practice what it preaches after Lip Eng's abusive language in Parliament, as when BN MPs crossed the line in terms of language, the opposition would be up in arms, giving lectures on the importance of proper conduct and decorum.

In a related matter, Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia says there is a need to introduce time limits for the oral question-and-answer session in the House as some MPs were not following the standing orders. "Even though I or my deputies don't reprimand you, it does not mean you can speak as you wish," Pandikar told Parliament yesterday.

Batumalai brothers executed

The Batumalai brothers, 45-year-old Rames and 40-year-old Suthar, were hanged to death at dawn today, despite a pending clemency appeal to commute their death sentence delivered in February 2010 for a murder 12 years ago.

The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Office for South East Asia has condemned what it calls the rushed and "secretive" nature of the execution of the brothers who were hung at dawn, yesterday.

Meanwhile PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said, the executions went against the syariah objectives (maqasid syariah), as serious matters like executions must be done consistent with the spirit and values of Islam, for the sake of justice and as hikmah (a lesson) for the offender.

PAS may cut ties with Bersatu

PAS has warned that it will sever ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) if the latter joins Pakatan Harapan. PAS deputy president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the party would cease negotiations with Bersatu if this happens.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan claimed that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) leadership finds it difficult working with Pakatan Harapan. Takiyuddin said a Bersatu leader once revealed to him that this is because the fledgling party finds it tough to influence decisions.

While PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail reiterated Pakatan Harapan's preparedness to accept Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) into the coalition. She welcomed Bersatu chairperson Mahathir Mohamad's commitment to see his party eventually joining Harapan.

More Kinibites

A new opposition party is in the works with the single objective of fighting corruption. The party is mooted by former PKR Youth chief Ezam Mohd Noor and former Umno man Khairuddin Abu Hassan.

Singapore academician Cherian George, during a talk on 'The Global Assault on Religious Tolerance', said that a speech crosses the line if it promotes incitement - instigating people to cause harm to other people - that’s where we draw the line. Else if it is merely offending feelings, it should be legal.

Just because six natives from the Kelabit, Lun Bawang and Penan tribes had re-settled at another area, the Federal Court today ruled they are not entitled to a claim made against four timber companies, the Sarawak Forestry Department and the state government, for encroaching into their purported Native Customary Right land.

Looking ahead

Komas will send a memo on the Lena Hendry case to the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
