Floods hit Terengganu again, after continuous heavy rain

Continuous heavy rain since morning has caused several low-lying areas in Besut to be flooded and so far, five relief centres have been opened in the district to accommodate the flood victims.

Terengganu Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lt-Kol Che Adam A Rahman said 54 families, comprising 16 families, had been evacuated so far.

Che Adam said the five relief centres were at Masjid Kampung (Kg) Oh, Balairaya Perumahan Laklok, Surau Kg Gong Bukit Kenak, Balairaya Kg Beris Pak Abu and Balairaya Kg Renek.

The State Flood Operations Room was activated at 8pm today, he said in a statement.

The water level at two rivers in Setiu has exceeded the danger level, while a river in Besut exceeded the warning level and a river in Hulu Terengganu exceeded the alert level.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department, through its website, publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, reported that in Setiu, Sungai Nerus in Kg Langkap recorded a reading of 22.01 metres, with the danger level at 21.50m and Sungai Chalok at Jambatan Chalok recording 9.50m, which exceeded the danger level of 8.40m.

In Besut, Sungai Besut at Jambatan Keruak recorded a reading of 34.11m, which exceeded the warning level of 34m, and in Hulu Terengganu, Sungai Telemong at Kuala Ping has risen to 19.18m, which exceeded the alert level of 19.00m.

Increase in flood victims in Kelantan

In Kota Baru, the number of flood victims in Kelantan has increased to 527 people as of 9pm today from 111 people late this afternoon, following continous heavy rain since yesterday.

The Social Welfare Department (JKM), through InfoBanjir application, said a total of 16 relief centres were now opened in five districts, namely Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Bachok, Tanah Merah and Pasir Puteh.

In Kota Baru, 126 victims fron 93 families were now seeking shelter at four relief centres in the district while 109 people from 33 families were evacuated to five relief centres in Pasir Mas.

In Bachok, a total of 76 victims from 22 families were being sheltered at a relief centre, followed by three relief centres in Tanah Merah involving 75 people out of 19 families and three relief centres in Pasir Puteh (141 people from 40 families).

Kelantan JKM director Mohammad Hanafi Maulud when contacted said the flood-hit villages were located in low-lying areas which were easily inundated with water during heavy rain.

However, he said all five major rivers in the state was still at safe levels.

In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, all the 11 flood relief centres that were opened to accommodate flood victims were closed today after all the victims, involving 2,880 people from 910 families, were allowed to return to their respective homes.

Sabah Malaysian Civil Defence Force director Kol Mulliadi Al-Hamdi Ladin said the Disaster Operations Control Centre in Kota Marudu was also officially closed at 5pm today.

However, Mulliadi said, an evacuation centre in the Pitas district remained open as the 77 people who were accommodated there had yet to return home.

"The evacuation centre in Pitas is expected to be closed tomorrow morning," he said in a statement issued in Kota Kinabalu.

If the weather continues to improve and the situation is safe, the evacuees would be allowed to return home, he added.
