The Umno veterans association has urged the BN-led Perlis government to rein in state mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, from his clear and present anti-government escapades.

"Veteran Umno wants the Perlis government to reconsider the appointment of Mohd Asri as present Perlis mufti or ask him to choose between politics and being a mufti.

"Umno veterans also urged Perlis Umno not to turn a blind eye to the rude and outspoken mufti, which is fast becoming a (political) eyesore," said the movement's secretary Mustapha Yaakub in a statement today.

The association expressed its regret and disappointment with the Perlis mufti's open anti-government stance and his ongoing open criticism against the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, and support of the opposition.

"The mufti's actions are too much and cannot be stomached any more," added Mustapha.

The Umno veteran argued that Mohd Asri's open interference in political matters and government administration is excessive and has become a political eyesore.

"As a mufti, he should know (the limits of ) his job scope and responsibilities," said Mustapha, adding that Mohd Asri should realise that he is just the mufti in a small state

While it is not wrong for the mufti to advice the leadership, it must be done with decorum suited to his office and not by blatantly interfering in matters which is above his pay grade and supersede the dignity of the mufti institution, he said.

"If he wants to enter politics. Umno veterans challenge him to resign as mufti and contest in the upcoming 14th general election. Mohd Asri can chose to run on an opposition ticket, as he love them so much," sniped Mustapha.

Out of all the state muftis, Mohd Asri is seen by many to be the lone voice in the wilderness, speaking out against the government on matters such as corruption, abuse of power and human rights violations.

Mohd Asri has gottne into hot water previouly for his progressive and pro-governance reform stance.
