The murder case of PKR activist Bill Kayong has been solved, said the inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

In a tweet today, the top cop lauded the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) success in nabbing the alleged murderer.

“Shooter arrested and murder weapon recovered,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak police chief Mazlan Mansor also expressed confidence that the case has been solved, but said police were still tracking several suspects still at large.

“The particulars of the suspects still at large cannot be released at this time. Work is still in progress to compile the investigation (files) for the purpose of charging the suspects in court,” he said in a statement.

Kayong is best known as an activist on native customary land rights issues, and was also the PKR Bekenu candidate during the Sarawak state election in May.

He was shot dead while waiting at a traffic light intersection on the morning of June 21. The murder weapon was reported to be a shotgun.

The motive is believed to be a land-related issue.

On June 30 and July 1, the police had arrested six people between the age of 22 and 41 for questioning in relation to the murder. Five of them are men, and one is a woman.

Mazlan said that at 5pm today, one of the suspects led police to his home in Jalan Hai Nam Lama, Miri, and showed the shotgun believed to have been used to kill Kayong.

“The shotgun and several shotgun shells including a spent casing were confiscated from the location shown by the suspect.

“With the arrest of the suspects and the seizure of the shotgun, we are confident that the murder of Bill Kayong has been solved,” he said.

Yesterday, PKR went to the police headquarters in Bukit Aman to demand to meet the investigation team for probing Kayong murder, in order to find out more about the case.

They also expressed concern about ongoing threats against its leaders, particularly its Miri MP Dr Michael Teo. Kayong was Teo’s political secretary prior to his death.

However, Khalid had turned down PKR’s request, but offered them a meeting with the Sarawak CID chief instead.
