Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom said it was unnecessary to organise the debate between Perlis Mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin and Malaysia Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah Organisation (Aswaja) president Zamihan Mat Zin Al-Ghari.

However, Jamil said if there was an urgent need, the discussion should be held behind closed doors.

“In fact, if the closed-door discussion is held, disputes and recriminations should be avoided in maintaining the spirit of Islamic brotherhood,” he said.

Jamil Khir said Malaysia is an Islamic country that moves along with the views of honourable scholars who hold on to the principles of the Sunnah Wal Jamaah which emphasise on tolerance, moderation, and open-mindedness in relation to differences in Islam and shun hostility and strife among Muslims.

The debate, titled ‘Religious Extremism in Malaysia: A Discussion’, is scheduled to be held at 9pm on Wednesday, at the Prime Minister's Department, as reported by the media.
