YOURSAY | ‘If Najib was popular, why the need to mobilise people to welcome him?’

Back from New York and Milan, hero's welcome for Najib

Chipmunk: Hero or zero? He tries to paint Malaysia as a politically stable and racially tolerant nation abroad but in reality, it is the opposite. The whole world knows about Malaysia and the many scandals he is involved in.

How could it that The Wall Street Journal , Sarawak Report , Malaysiakini and other online news reports be wrong?

Why did the red shirt group threaten the Chinese minority? Why did the former attorney-general quit before his actual retirement? Why was the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) indirectly disbanded when the 1MDB board of directors were about to be questioned?

There are just too many questions that Najib have yet to answer and you still want to call it a "hero's welcome"?

Doc: For the last 10 days or so, Najib was in New York attending meetings after meetings; none of these meetings had any global or national significant while here in Malaysia the ringgit was deprecating and the haze was getting from bad to worse.

Nothing was done by Najib or his ministers to address these major national catastrophes in his absence.

After New York, Najib went to Milan on a working visit to open some Expo for which most international leaders of repute would have delegated insignificant tasks such as this to their subordinates.

What he did there in Milan with his wife for the rest of the days is left to speculation. And when Najib returned home after an uneventful international trip, he got a "hero's welcome".

Res Ipsa: Back in 1971, I can vividly remember when our victorious football team returned from Seoul after conquering Asian football powerhouses like Japan and South Korea to qualify for the Munich Olympics, Syed Ahmad and his teammates were given a rapturous and heroes’ welcome by a vociferous crowd.

The crowd had voluntarily gathered at Subang Airport to show their affection and admiration for the team and it was evident that patriotism was the order of the day among the multiracial crowd.

Thereafter such receptions were reserved for world-class athletes such as the Sidek brothers, Lee Chong Wei and Nicol David for their feats achieved on the world stage.

Fast forward to the present, it makes one wonder what our PM has achieved on this trip to the United Nations and Milan that needs to be accorded a hero's welcome.

Perhaps someone from the 1,000 who showed up can enlighten 27 million Malaysians as to the actual achievement by our PM to be accorded such status?

Mushiro: Umno and Najib's team are getting more and more desperate to manipulate public opinion, and yet it is not working.

If Najib was genuinely popular, why the need to mobilise people to welcome him?

Odysseus: Looking at the photo, it seems the cabinet ministers do not have much to do. They can spare so many hours at the airport just to welcome Najib back from overseas.

Slumdog: Look at all the sycophants surrounding Najib.

When US President Barack Obama or any other western leader returns home from an overseas trip, we don’t see thousands at the airport welcoming them home and surrounded by inane banners and posters.

They would be lucky if a handful of their senior staff turned up to greet them. Ah, all is explained, it is a Bernama report.

Myrights: Just think about this. Here's the prime minister of a country who has received US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) in his personal bank account from a suspicious source that he claimed to be from the Middle East.

A prime minister who is in charge of state investment fund 1MDB which has accumulated RM42 billion in debt, and a finance minister at a time when the ringgit dropped from RM3.0 to almost RM4.5 to US$1 while inflation has hit the roof.

Yet, we have these 1,000 Umno goons, including BN cybertroopers in Malaysiakini , still hero worshiping him.

Anonymous #19098644: Going to Milan to boost bilateral relations? If he is actually going there to boost bilateral relations, he would be in Rome and not Milan the shopping capital of Italy.

It is like saying that he is going to Thailand to boost bilateral relations but he is actually holidaying in Phuket.

What trade treaties did he sign in Milan, what investments were closed in Italy? How many members of the chambers of commerce were in Milan with him and who did they meet?

If you want to take a break say so. Everybody is entitled to some time off. Just don't treat the rakyat as idiots.

Lukesky: Somebody should nominate the PM for the Nobel prize next year but they may have to create some new categories though:

1) For contribution to creating racial disharmony.

2) For contribution to destroying rule of law and justice.

3) For receiving the largest donation.

Further suggestions welcome.
