The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) called on the government today to reveal details of the just-concluded negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).

This will help convince the people that the TPPA is beneficial for the country, Abim secretary-general Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said in a statement.

"The assurances by advocates of the TPPA should not remain merely as general pledges or simply vague promises offered," Muhammad Faisal said.

Right now, the details of the agreement are shrouded in secrecy, he said, which caused uneasiness among the people.

The people should be made aware of the details as the "era of government knows best is over".

"Democracy means that the people themselves must decide on the national economic direction and on this issue of the TPPA, the people will wholly bear the risks," he explained.

From what they have understood about the TPPA so far, Muhammad Faisal ( photo ) said, Abim believes the agreement is actually detrimental to the country.

It is a form of "corporate colonisation", he argued, which impinges on national sovereignty.

He pointed out the example of foreign corporations being able to challenge national policy if they believe it is against their corporate interests.

Hence, Abim urged the government to address valid criticisms before making its final decision on the TPPA.

The TPPA negotiations were concluded two days ago in Atlanta, United States. The dela is a sweeping trade agreement involving 12 countries.
