Umno leader wants MCMC under Home Ministry

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) should be put under the Home Ministry's jurisdiction, Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar says.

"I suggest that the government considers transferring MCMC from the Communications and Multimedia Ministry to the Home Ministry so that enforcement of the laws can be carried out better," Noh said in his speech at the Umno Puchong division meeting in Serdang today.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also present at the event, but he did not respond to Noh’s suggestion when he made his officiating speech at the delegates AGM.

Noh also expressed his support for the government’s move to amend to social media laws, saying that lies were being spread on social media that added to the chaos in the country.

However, he noted that even if the laws are changed, it would not matter if they were not enforced.

"If (MCMC is) under the Home Ministry, then, for sure, stern action will be taken (against those who break the laws)," said Noh, a foirmner minister who is the MP for Tanjung Karang.

Social media has taken a slew of criticisms from many BN politicians of late, with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak first bringing up the proposal to amend the social media laws after the Low Yat Plaza fracas in July.
