IGP has got his priorities all wrong, again

YOURSAY ‘Is the PDRM jealous of the good work done by PPS?’

Surrender before we raid homes, IGP warns PPS

Bystander: First and foremost, the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) is a group of volunteers sanctioned by the state government to assist in the betterment of the community in general.

It should be seen as a complement to the police who always say that they can't be around at all times to ensure security.

Did PPS make an attempt to register with the ROS (Registrar of Societies)? Even if they did try, it would be futile.

If that's how IGP see PPS, then what about Rukun Tetanga, residents engaging guards, Rela and many other unregistered NGOs and village surveillance groups?

Anonymous #039163649: I have seen with my own eyes how the PPS volunteers help out during accidents, floods, processions and festivals.

They get no salary, they don't take bribes, they carry no weapon, they have no power, yet they carry out a lot of humanitarian services.

If the PPS is shut down, the victors are the police and the losers are the people of Penang - Malays, Chinese and Indians.

Old Timer: Is the PDRM jealous of the good work done by PPS and for stealing the limelight from them?

Negarawan: “It is best for those responsible for PPS to surrender before we raid (their) homes," inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar said in a Twitter posting this morning.

Our PDRM is in shambles because it cannot even control mounting crime rate in the country. One has only to listen to the number of illegal fireworks during festivities to know that the PDRM is completely inefficient and ineffective.

The PPS has been around for many years and it has rendered a good service to the people of Penang, some saying even much better than the PDRM.

If any action needs to be taken, it should be against the PDRM for its lack of leadership, efficiency, and effectiveness.

The IGP should stop playing politics and focus on the plight of the rakyat. Otherwise, please step down.

Ferdtan: IGP Khalid, be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

He demanded that all the PPS members to surrender to the police, otherwise they would be arrested at their homes.

Penang, let's do it. Obey the law. March quietly to the nearest police station to surrender en masse as instructed by the IGP. This will be the largest 'surrender of suspects' since the communist insurgency in the country.

Penang Aduns (state assemblypersons) should walk in solidarity with the so-called 'suspects' to the police station. If possible, Penangites should walk with them to lend support.

Anonymous_4031c: The Penang government should go to court and get a declaration as to the legality of PPS since CM Lim Guan Eng is very sure the organisation is legal and within the powers of the state to do it.

Its lawyers should also consider getting an injunction pending finality to the matter.

Louis: IGP, where is your priority? What serious crimes have those PPS committed to warrant such action of raiding their houses?

They are not hardcore criminals, but mere members of a body that is ironically helping the police to fight crime. I hope the police do not go, armed with machine guns and donning balaclavas when conducting such raids.

If only you can channel the same enthusiasm and energy into arresting murderers, robbers and snatch thieves, the crime rate will automatically go down and PPS will automatically die a natural death.

Anonymous #039163649: Please PDRM, please think of the yeoman service that PPS renders - a service above themselves.

To those who say they have no authority to direct traffic, suppose we are an accident victim on the road and quick removal to hospital is vital, are we going to stop them saying that PPS has no authority to direct traffic?

If authority is needed, then PDRM should empower PPS. The Penang state government, instead of just blaming the cops for the state poor state of public order, like other state governments, has decided to give them a helping hand and this is the thanks they get.

I have heard of individual cops praising the PPS for making their tasks easier for them, otherwise the cops have to handle everything and they are already over-stretched.

Disgusting: It was Merdeka Day. We are supposed to celebrate our 57th year of independence. It appears that the IGP is bent on creating unnecessary problem in going after an organisation, the formation of which is to do good to society.

In my opinion, Khalid is the worst IGP we have ever had. Where is his spirit of Merdeka?
