Probe needed on circulation of ‘fake’ RM100 notes in Kuching
ADS

I would like to urge the Police Department and Bank Negara to carry out a thorough investigation regarding the circulation of ‘fake’ RM100 notes in a coffee shop in Kuching recently.

We were informed by the owner of coffee shop who wishes to only be known as Lee, that they received the first ‘fake’ RM100 notes on the March 6, 2017 (Monday) and the second yesterday (March 21, 2017). The money was allegedly passed to them by a young customer at the shop.

Lee took the money to bank in initially to pay for his loans. It was there that he was informed that the RM100 note is ‘fake’. We also received complaints that such ‘fake’ notes are also circulated around King Centre and also MJC area.

The circulation of such ‘fake’ notes is a serious offence and can be investigated under Section 489D of the Penal Code for making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency notes or banknotes, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and fine upon conviction.

A police report has been made regarding the matter, and thus would urge the police to take immediate action to halt any circulation of counterfeit notes in the city.

We also would like to inform the public especially shop owners of such incidents so that they will be extra careful when dealing with situations similar to this.
