Longest white elephant in the city?
ADS

Kuala Lumpur city mayor Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz has refuted allegations that there were no such things as white elephant projects by City Hall, as reported earlier by Star Metro.

He said all projects in the city are well-maintained and used by city folk, and were undertaken for their convenience. If so, City Hall should be getting praises.

I do not have the time or interest to verify all projects but would like to ask the mayor whether he is aware of the longest white elephant in the city.

The tallest overhead bridge was built over Jalan Cheras, so tall that lifts were installed at both ends for the ‘convenience’ of city folk but they are not in working order and instead used as rubbish dump.

The bridge is extra-long because it straddles over a 10-lane highway and a broad road shoulder plus another parallel road.

No one bothers to use the overhead bridge as there was already a shorter route using an underpass at Jalan Ikan Ayu, long before the overhead pedestrian bridge was built.

The underpass is much safer with a steady stream of motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians passing through, while access to the overhead bridge is on a slope located at a deserted area.

If this is not money wasted, then it must be relative, compared to much bigger sums spent on other wasteful projects.
